HEALED BY HIS STRIPES
AS FOR ME
AND MY HOUSE WE WILL SERVE THE LORD
My husband and I are working as officers in a Premier Bank in India.
We have a 23 year old son and a 19 year old daughter. My husband is 51 years
old. I am 50 years old. Until February 1990, we led a very nominal Christian
life. We were living as 'Sunday Christians'. We used to go to Church on
Sundays. On weekdays we did not have time to even think of the Lord. Every
morning and evening we offered two minutes' prayers only - like 2 minutes
noodles! Bible reading? Oh no! Where was the time for it? Our time was not
sufficient for worldly affairs, for reading story books and for watching T.V.
While leading a life like this, I started feeling a vacuum within me. We earned
a lot of money but we always had shortages. An emptiness surrounded me. I did
not have peace of mind.
On 18th February, I heard that my niece had received anointing of the Holy
Spirit.. Then only I realised that though I had accepted Christ as Lord and
Saviour in my youth, I had back-slided and wasted 35 years of my life. At that
time we were living in Madurai, one of the big towns in Tamil Nadu and a series
of Gospel meetings were being conducted at Tumkum public grounds. We attended
the meeting on the last day. I prayed with all my heart "Lord Jesus,
Please forgive my sins, please anoint me with the Holy Spirit. I will not give
up until you anoint me, I will keep kneeling in this ground." With all my
might I prayed and cried my heart out. I committed myself to Lord Jesus.
Hallelujah! Immediately I was anointed by the Holy Spirit. I became a child of
God. I returned home as a new creation!
I told my husband that I had received the Holy Spirit. He laughed at me. But he
started seeing changes in my life style. Story books, TV et all fled. Worries,
lamentations and laziness disappeared. I thirsted for the Word of God and
spiritual books. My longing for prayer increased. From our income, we started
giving tithe (One-tenth) for the Lord. We started buying spiritual books. I
started praying for my husband's salvation. He also started reading the
spiritual books. He realised that our body is the temple of the Lord and gave
up his 20 year old smoking habit for the Lord's sake. He committed himself to
Christ, and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour.
Our Lord Jesus started blessing our family. He satisfied all our needs. He
blessed our income. He changed our disobedient children. As a family we served
Lord Jesus Christ. We devoted all our free time to Bible reading, meditation,
prayer and reading spiritual books.My husband shared his testimony in one or
two gospel meetings. He shared his testimony at Fr.Berchman’s Prayer Garden on
7.11.90. Thus we received more and more spiritual blessings day by day.
On 7.1.91 our 19 year old daughter, who was only 4
and a half year old, had playfully visited a room where an old lady was
suffering from asthma and was struggling to breathe. She hardly had any sleep
for 4 days. My daughter Angel told her “Grandma, Jesus will heal you. Shall I
pray for you?” The old lady thought that she was joking and playing. So she
said, ‘Yes, please pray.’ My daughter kept her hand on the lady's forehead and
prayed.
The Lord who said "Let little children come to me, and do not forbid
them" heard the child's prayer and replied immediately.
The old lady who had not slept for 4 days was greatly relieved of the wheezing
and went to sleep immediately. Her daughter and a nurse who witnessed the
entire episode told me of this incident. Through this incident, Lord Jesus made
me feel His presence in the hospital.
That day, my husband realised the full meaning of the part of the promise he
had received on the New Year's Day -- "I will not leave you" My
husband said, "Our Lord has already given the assurance that He will not
forsake me. Let us pray without any fear or worry"
My husband recollected another incident. On December 16,1990, by God’s grace,
my husband escaped from a major and prospective fatal car accident .He was
driving our car. While taking a bend in the road, a Matador van coming in the
opposite direction skidded out of its lane and headed directly towards our car.
The brake failed in our car. The van and our car were all set for a head on
collision. If the van had hit us, the result would have been disastrous. When
the van was about to hit the car, miraculously the van and the car separated
from each other in a fraction of a second . The van dashed against one side of
the rear bumper of our car and stopped. It was only God's hand and his mighty
deed that made the van and car separate at the last minute.
My husband was exultant and happy. "If I were to die" he declared,
"I would have died in that accident. But the Lord Jesus saved my life.
Therefore I will surely not die by this disease. Definitely the Lord shall save
me and rescue me from this disease also. Knowing that I would get such a
disease and that we would be upset, He has given me a beautiful promise on the
1st of January itself. Therefore nobody needs to be upset or worry. Pray well
without ceasing." See the confession of faith of a person who was in the
clutches of death.
That day Bro. S. Sankar and Mrs.Sankar, evangelists, came to the hospital and
prayed for my husband.
The Lord who gives His blood even today
Tuesday,8.1.91 dawned. There was no
improvement in my husband’s condition. Bleeding in the mouth subsided. But
bleeding in the urine went unabated. There were bleeding spots in his eyes
also. He became exceedingly tired due to loss of blood. His eye lids started
drooping even while he was talking.
The doctors told me, “Please search for blood donors immediately. We have to
take out the entire blood from your husband’s body and infuse fresh blood. Your
husband’s blood group is also rare -- A1B (positive). Therefore, search for the
donors quickly and earnestly.”
That’s all. I felt the earth slipping under my feet. I knew that for blood
cancer patients only such replacement of blood is administered. But here was
the doctor, telling me that such a treatment was to be given to my husband. I
was confused. Was he suffering from blood cancer? I asked myself. I felt as
though I was losing my sanity. I started crying to Lord Jesus, our eternal
blood donor, who shed his blood for us.
"Lord Jesus, 2000 years ago you came into this world and shed your
precious blood for us. You are living even today. You are a risen Lord. You
should give my husband your blood, not only spiritually but physically also.
You are our eternal blood donor. Let your blood flow through my husband's body.
One drop of your precious blood is sufficient to keep my husband alive. I am
depending on you only for the blood. Hence, I will not seek any other blood
donor."
I cried, I wept and I wailed as I came into our room. I felt darkness surround
me. I was struggling in darkness. Evil forces were dancing all around me. I
heard someone speaking to me -- "What if your husband dies? He is saved.
He is a child of God. If he dies, he will go straight to Heaven. What you earn
is sufficient for you and your children."
I was all the more confused. I asked, "Lord what is this? Is it you who is
speaking like this?" Immediately the Lord replied, "With long life I
will satisfy him. And show him my salvation" (Psalm 91:16). Then I
realised that the person who spoke first was none other than Satan himself.
At that time, my husband’s aunt Mrs. Johnson visited us. She is the Branch Leader
of CSI Chain of Prayer - Madurai Ramnad Dist. Her ministry is very poweful in
Thirumangalam, near Madurai.
She started to pray. She rebuked the power of the devil in her prayer. She
prayed casting out the devil in the wonderful name of Jesus. With authority,
she commanded Satan to leave us, in the mighty name of Jesus. I also joined her
in prayer.
At that moment the darkness that tormented me lifted. I felt light shining all
over me, around me and within me. My faith in the Lord was strengthened immensely.
Our children started pestering me.
“Mummy, when will Daddy become all right?
“
“When will he be discharged? “
“Mummy, if he goes on bleeding like this
what will happen? “
“Mummy, if Daddy does not get healed what
will happen?”
Likewise, our children kept on asking me questions. They were perplexed,
confused and upset.When the little children asked me questions like this, what
answers could I offer? "I lifted up my eyes to the hills from where comes
my help" (Ps.121: 1). I replied "Our Lord is good and mighty. He is
Almighty God. Nothing is impossible for Him.. In the time of Moses, he
performed the miracle of turning water into blood. He is the same unchanging
God, yesterday, today and forever more. Our Lord is capable of performing the
same miracle in the reverse direction. He who turned water into blood is able
to turn the urine which is full of blood into water. Let all of us pray that
the Lord would perform such a reverse miracle. Come, join me and pray for Daddy."
What I have spoken to you
The portion, "Until I have done what I have spoken to
you" of the promise received by my husband during the New Year Service was
still a puzzle to us. Bro. and Mrs.Arumainayagam, evangelists, visited us.
While praying, Mrs.Arumainayagam started prophesying. The Lord's glorious
presence filled the hospital room. Lord Jesus started speaking through her.
I am going to use you in My ministry.
"Like Jeremiah, I have chosen you even before you were created in your
mother's womb. I have separated you."
"Like Samuel, I shall make you a great prophet. Like it was known that
from Dan to Beersheba that Samuel is the prophet of God. I shall bless you. I
shall make your name famous."
"I have permitted Satan to test you like Job, to strengthen your faith. I
shall doubly bless you."
"Like Elisha who got twice the gifts of the Spirit of Elijah, I shall
bless you with double portion."
"I shall take you and use you mightily the world over. I shall take you
all over the world."
"I shall fill you with the gifts of the Holy Spirit."
"You shall win every soul you meet."
"I shall heal every sick person on whom you lay your hands."
"You shall own the place on which you will walk."
"Awake, Awake! Arise and shine. Put on your strength, O Zion."
Like this, Lord Jesus was making promises, one after
the other. At that moment, my husband was thinking ..... "What is this?
The Lord is saying that He is going to use me in His ministry. But I am yet to
receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit."
At that very moment, Lord Jesus was answering my husband’s question and anxiety
through Mrs. Arumainayagam. He said, "Son, you are doubting me. Are you
asking for a sign? You will see me face to face. This is the sign I am giving
you"
All of us were sitting in God’s presence with reverence and awe. After the
prayer was over, we totally committed ourselves to His service.
Now, the portion of the promise "What I have spoken to you" was
revealed to us.
CMC Hospital, Vellore or Apollo
Hospital, Madras
It was 9.1.91. There was no improvement in my
husband's condition. We realised that the treatment at Madurai was not
sufficient and that he had to be taken to a better, bigger hospital in some
other city. In Madras, the hospital considered best equipped was the Apollo
hospital. My brother told me that if we had decided to take my husband to
Apollo hospital, arrangements would have to be made immediately.
I prayed silently -- "Lord, should we go to Apollo Hospital or Christian
Medical Hospital, Vellore? What is your will? Please guide us and show us the
way. Unless I get your direction I will not move my husband from here. Please
show us where we will get the best treatment for my husband."
I then told my brother that I had asked Lord Jesus whether to go to CMC,
Vellore or Apollo, Madras. He would surely lead us to the right hospital. we
would take him thereAs we were conversing, our SBI Officers Association Deputy
Regional Secretary, Mr. Thomas came and told me to meet our Regional
Secretary,Mr.N.M.Chellam immediately. Mr. N.M. Chellam said, "Madam, we
have made enquiries with local doctors regarding your husband's illness. Your
husband has been affected by a dreadful disease. Those who have specialised in
Haematology alone can treat him. There is no doctor in Madurai who has
specialised in Haematology. There is no Haematology Department in Apollo
Hospital too. You must immediately take your husband to CMC,Vellore. There is a
good Haematology Department where you will receive appropriate treatment."
The Lord has said in Is.65:24, "Before they call I will answer; and while
they are still speaking I will hear." He heard me while I was speaking to
my brother and gave me a clear reply through our colleagues as to which
hospital I should take my husband.
We were absolutely sure that it is the will of God that we should go to CMC
Hospital, Vellore and get treated.
The Lord who
does everything for me
The Lord
said CMC Hospital, Vellore. But all travel arrangements were to be made within
2 days!
I was singing a song -- "The Lord will do and complete everything for me,
I shall not fear"-- a Tamil song, and went and met our Deputy General
Manager Mr. A.P.Jeyaraj. I found favour in his sight. He immediately rang up
Vellore Town Branch of State Bank of India, informed the Branch Manager of my
husband's disease and requested him to make all possible arrangements.
The Lord who does all things for me, got favour for me in my superior’s eyes
and made our journey possible
Road in
the Wilderness
We planned to take Vaigai Express, a Super fast
train, from Madurai to Villupuram and an ambulance from Villupuram to Vellore.
Doctors advised us to take my husband in A/C chair car. It was 10.1.91. We
planned to go to Vellore on 11.1.91. The trains in India are crowded, and seats
are booked days in advance. How could we get tickets and reservations within
one day!
Mr. Muniappan, my colleague, and I went to the Railway Divisional office to get
the tickets released through the Emergency Quota. Since my husband's condition
was very serious, I decided to take my children, mother-in-law
and my mother to Vellore.
While we were going to the Railway Office, I was praying , "Lord Jesus,
you have made arrangements for us in Vellore itself. Now to undertake the
journey in the wilderness, please make a road in the wilderness and get us
tickets. Let your presence go before us. You are the Lord God who has promised
to make a road for us in the wilderness”.(Is.43:19)
The persons who went with me doubted whether we could get tickets for all the
persons. In all, we had to get 4 adult tickets and 2 children's tickets. They
felt that at best we would get tickets for my husband and me, and the others,
whom I needed so much for support and courage, would not be able to accompany
us.
I kept telling them - "Lord Jesus is going before us. We will surely get
tickets for all. All of us will go to Vellore in the Vaigai Express. Christ the
King will get the tickets for us. Jesus has directed us to go to Vellore. He
has arranged for the ambulance in Villupuram. Will He not arrange for the train
tickets from Madurai to Villupuram? Surely, Jesus will never fail."
We reached the Railway Divisional Office while discussing like this. I kept on
praying -- "Lord, please let me find favour in the eyes of the
Superintendent. You were with Joseph and he found favour in the eyes of the
Jailor" (Gen.39)
We met the Commercial Superintendent. I explained to him my husband's
condition. Immediately, without hesitation he released tickets on the emergency
quota for my husband and me in the A/C Car. The Railway clerk, who had
discussed our problem, told him of the others who were to accompany us. The
Superintendent asked him whether seats were available under E.Q. in the lower
class compartment. The clerk replied in the affirmative. That’s all. Without a
word the Commercial Superintendent released tickets for the others also. I
praised and thanked the Lord. My companions were simply astonished. They could
not believe their eyes. The Lord's magnificent name was glorified. Hallelujah!
Our travel arrangements were complete. We were to start on 11.1.91 Friday by
Vaigai Express from Madurai at 6.45 a.m. and travel upto Villupuram . From
Villupuram we were to travel by ambulance.
Everything will be all right
Before we left for Vellore, on 10.1.91, a believer from my office, Mr. Joseph
Devasigamani, told me -- "Madam, do not worry about anything. On February
5th, your husband will become perfectly all right. The Lord has revealed to me
that everything will be all right on 5th February.”
I thought, “what is he saying! February 5th? Today is only the 10th of January.
How can my husband struggle with this dreadful disease for another 25 days?”
But I kept it in my heart.
Like Gideon
On 10.1.91 evening, I went to my office and applied for leave, after
handing over charge. Before I left, I stood at my desk and prayed, "Lord
Jesus, it is written that they looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces
were not ashamed. (Ps.34: 5). I will not come back to this place with shame,
having lost my husband. Lord, You are in charge. You shall return me to this
place with radiance and happiness. My feet shall touch this place only with
happiness. Otherwise, do not bring me back to this place Lord. Please help
me."
I came back to the hospital. My husband, my mother-in-law, my mother, my
children and I made preparations for the journey to Vellore.
There was slight improvement in my husband's condition.
I prayed, "Lord, Gideon asked for a sign. Please, give me also a sign.
Before we start our journey tomorrow, at least once, let my husband’s urine be
normal in colour." The Lord answered my prayer. On 11.1.91 early morning,
his urine was almost normal in colour.
I will lead them
My mother and I were packing throughout the night of 10.1.91. I felt as though
the entire family was breaking up and disintegrating. I did not know whether we
would return to our house with my husband alive. I was feeling desperate.
We all got ready in the early hours of 11.1.91. I prayed, "Lord,according
to your direction, I have made all arrangements and now we are starting towards
Vellore. Let your presence go before us. What do you have to say to me?"
Asking this, I opened the Bible. Jeremiah 31: 9 came alive before my eyes
"They shall come with weeping and with supplications, I will lead them. I
will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters, in a straight way in which
they shall not stumble; For I am a Father of Israel, and Ephraim is my first
born." (Jer.31:9)
That was all I needed. All my anxieties rolled away. Divine peace and joy
filled my heart. “Lord, you have assured me that my husband is your son. You
have promised to lead us. I have no worries now." I declared. With peace we
commenced our journey.
We engaged a taxi and took my husband to the Railway Station. He could not walk
and doctors had also advised him not to walk. We took him in a wheelchair from
the car to the railway platform to board the train.
A great group of our relatives in Madurai had thronged the station to see us
off. The sight of my husband in the wheelchair stirred and moved everyone's
heart. He looked very pathetic. It was a heart rending scene. Everybody who had
assembled there cried and wept and the only dry eyed persons were my husband,
Aunty Mrs. Johnson and I.
Struggling in Prayer -- Jacob
The Lord gave me mountain moving faith.
During the harrowing days I was able to keep my composure. Only once did I cry
in front of others, on 8th January, when the doctors told me that my husband’s
entire blood had to be changed.
On 6.1.91 I cried in the presence of the Lord, when my husband was first
affected by the disease. Then only the Lord spoke about the "Whole armour
of God." At all other times, the Lord protected and guarded me against
crying or worrying in front of others. He who begins and ends our faith had
given me abundant and mountain moving faith. He strengthened me and comforted
me and I cried only in His presence. I would lock the bathroom door and cry out
to Him "Lord, strengthen me, give me wisdom to take care of my husband. I
put my entire trust in you only. Please Lord, do not forsake me or leave me. I
will not let you go until you give my husband perfect health" I used to struggle
like Jacob.
Jacob struggled with God and prevailed. He said, “I will not let you go unless
you bless me.” says Gen. 32:26 . But Hosea 12: 3-4 throws light on how he
struggled.
"And in his strength he struggled with God. Yes, he struggled with the
Angel and prevailed; He wept and sought favour from Him."
Yes, Jacob wept and sought favour. “Lord, I will not let you go unless you
bless me,” he wept and cried with all his strength and sought favour. Dear
friends, I too struggled like Jacob. I wept, wept and sought favour from the
Lord. I wept, "Lord, I will not let you go unless you heal my husband
perfectly."
I wept and struggled, but all my weeping and crying were between Lord Jesus and
me.
When I used to weep, He would immediately comfort me and strengthen me.
I drew my strength from our eternal refuge. My colleagues and our relatives
were just puzzled at my composure. What? instead of worrying, this lady is
having unshakable faith in Lord Jesus and saying that Lord would definitely not
forsake her and would heal her husband. Poor thing, maybe she is in a fit of
hysteria. They used to pity me. To that extent our dear Lord gave me courage
and strength.
The Blood that was shed in Getsamane
I comforted everybody in the railway station whose eyes were flooded with
tears. "Why are you crying? We are taking him in a wheelchair but he will
surely return walking. The presence of God has gone before us to Vellore. He
has prepared us a way. He is leading us."
We boarded the train. I had 100% faith that somehow Lord Jesus would heal my
husband. But deep within my heart in a corner, I questioned - "Lord, what
a dreadful and strange disease has afflicted my husband." Before I could
complete my sentence, Lord Jesus replied very clearly -- "I have borne
even that disease on me. Why are you worried?"
Suddenly, an incident flashed back in my memory. In April 1990 I had gone to
Madras to attend a training course in computers. At that time
“Idimuzhakkam" meetings were held in Madras. I had the opportunity to
attend a meeting at which Dr. Justin Prabhakaran, an evangelist, was speaking
on the topic "Crucified Christ."
Dr. Justin preached about Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, and how
His "sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the
ground"(Luke 2:44). He said that a lot of medical research was undertaken
to confirm whether this incident could be true. And it was found out that when
a person is in great agony or trauma, capillary vessels could break and blood,
mingled with sweat, ooze out through the skin.
For my husband too, blood was oozing out of the capillary vessels under the
skin. Therefore, Lord Jesus had borne this particular seemingly unknown
sickness in His body 2000 years ago. It was no longer a strange or unknown
disease to me.
"He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses." (Mat.8:17)
"And by His Stripes, we are healed." (Is.53:5)
According to these verses, Lord Jesus has borne my husband's sickness in His
body. Let us believe that we are HEALED BY HIS STRIPES. Then we will be healed.
This kind of thinking started bubbling in my heart.
We travelled upto Villupuram by train. The ambulance that was arranged by our
Bank Officers at Villupuram was waiting for us. We left for Vellore and reached
at 7 p.m. We met Mr. Deivaraman, Branch Manager, Vellore Town Branch and went
to the Casualty Department of CMC Hospital. The doctors confirmed the diagnosis
of ITP and admitted my husband as an inpatient.
We Can Cure
The Chief of Haematology Department Dr. Mammen Chandy examined my husband on
12.1.91. He told me that the disease was curable. Since the platelet count was
very low, he would discharge us as soon as it increased. The platelet level
that was 40,000 in Madurai, had come down to 12,000 when we reached Vellore.
The doctors did not reveal this to us but kept my husband under close
observation.
On 13.1.91, his bone marrow was tested. Thank and Praise the Lord, the bone
marrow was normal and it was confirmed that it was not blood cancer. There also
they put my husband on steroid therapy. A steroid called predinosolone was
given in a heavy dosage of 60 mg.
The bleeding stopped after 2 days. Doctors informed us that he would be discharged as soon as platelets reached
normal level. My husband looked apparently all right. So my mother-in-law,
mother and the children went back to Madurai. My maternal aunt and uncle, Mr.
and Mrs. Samuel, who live in Vellore, took care of us with great love and
affection.
When my husband was in the casualty ward, he bumped his head against the door
frame and the area of the bruise was swollen. We noticed the swelling after 2
days and informed the doctor. The doctor was dazed and speechless. He was in a
state of shock. Then he said “You are very lucky. Even without any provocation,
the blood is oozing here and there in your body. But even after bumping your
head, how come you have not haemorraged in your brain? You could have died
instantaneously on getting hit on your head. How is it you are alive?” He could
not hide his surprise.
But it was no surprise to us. We knew just how my husband was kept alive. It
was because He (Jesus) was able to keep what I have committed to Him until that
day (II Tim. 1:12)
I had prayed on 6th January that my husband was wearing the helmet of salvation
and had asked the Lord to protect my husband's brain and let not even one cell
to bleed in his brain. I committed my husband's entire body into the nail
pierced hands of Lord Jesus. Therefore, though the head was hurt, the Lord was
able to keep my husband's brain without bleeding and damage and protected him
from eventual death.
Confirmed Calling
My husband says -- “Though I accepted the prophecy which was given to me in
Madurai, I was pondering whether I was worthy to do our Lord's glorious
ministry. I was questioning my capabilities. I had many shortcomings. I lacked
Bible knowledge. I could not read or write properly in Tamil or speak in pure
Tamil. I kept thinking alternatively of the calling and my capabilities. The
prophecy and the call alone occupied my mind. I did not care about the disease
at all. was slowly turning the pages of the Bible and I started reading III
John. The Lord Jesus started speaking to me through III John. The Lord felt
happy with my witness. He felt very happy that I was walking in the truth. (III
John 3). In verse 14, he promised to give me an opportunity to speak to him
face to face. It was as though the entire chapter was written exclusively for
me. This was my first experience to hear what the Lord speaks to me personally
through the Bible.
My heart lit up and I continued to read I Peter. The Lord again spoke through I
Peter, 1st Chapter. There He spoke about my disease, test, prophecy, faith,
advice and new life. He authenticated all that He had spoken through I Peter
1:25.
Now I did not have even an iota of doubt. All the doubts and apprehensions
regarding the prophecy and calling vanished. I committed and dedicated my
spirit, soul and body to the service of the Lord. The fact that the Lord had
chosen even me for His glorious ministry made my heart leap with joy. I was
reading a book titled, "My Weakness, His Strength," by Robert C.
Girard. It was written thus: “My Grace is sufficient for you for My strength is
made perfect in weakness." (II Cor. 12:9,11).
Our weakness causes God's power and glory to be unveiled and revealed. God
chooses the vessels of weakness and manifests His Power through them. When
others see God's power and might manifest through such weak vessels, they are
absolutely sure of God's power.’ This message blotted out all my concerns
regarding my sickness."
Thus my husband confirmed his calling.
Much earlier, when my sister-in-law came from the USA in Sept.89, we called on
the Leader of Madras CSI Diocese, Chain of Prayer, Mrs. Joseph. When she was
praying for our family, she told my husband, "Son, the Lord is asking your
heart. As a family you will serve the Lord. You have a definite call for His
Ministry. Therefore, if you are not born again so far, commit yourselves, get
saved and turn unto the Lord."
We were not saved at that time. Whatever she told us at that time, was like a
horn blown in deaf ears. Not that we did not care or ignored what she said! We
simply did not hear what she spoke!! Only if we had listened to what she had
spoken and did not obey, the question of disobedience or negligence would have
arisen. Isn’t it?.
So when we received the Lord's call to do His Ministry during this illness, my
mother-in-law, sister-in-law and Aunt Mrs. Johnson, reminded us of what Mrs.
Joseph had told us 3 years ago. Therefore we confirmed the calling my husband
had received without any doubt.
Valley of Darkness of Death
Days went by. We spent our time in prayer and in reading and meditating the
Word of God. I visited the 'Blessing Youth Mission' and met Bro. Jeyaraj, the
Financial Coordinator, and bought books of Bro.Stanley. My husband was reading
those books.
Medically and clinically my husband's condition was deteriorating day by day.
The platelet count was fluctuating between 10,000 and 9,000. The doctors who
gave us assurance that they could easily cure the disease were losing hope -- because
a platelet count of 10,000 is a fairly fatal count and my husband could
collapse any time.
Be Still...
We
remembered the time when we were in Madurai hospital. The Principal of Noyes
School, Mrs. Sornam Franklin, came to the hospital and prayed for us. She read
Psalm 46 and prayed over the verse -- "Be still and know that I am
God." (Ps.46:10).
In Vellore, when we were puzzled and confused, not knowing what to do, my
husband always quoted that verse. “There is nothing that we can do. The Lord
asks us to be still. We will wait upon the Lord at His feet," he used to
say . I used to get amazed to see my husband's faith grow so strong in the face
of despair.
My faith used to grow like a mountain. But sometimes it would become like a
bubble that might burst anytime. I used to get dejected by the circumstances
and my faith would take wings and fly away. Then I used to pray to God to
increase my faith. He answered my prayers, and strengthened me in faith.
But my husband's faith was steadfast and unshaken from the day he got the
disease. He had full faith that nothing would happen to him and that the Lord
would definitely make him all right. When we were in Vellore, my husband was
praying specifically for two things - one, that he should be completely healed
and the other, that he should receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit before
we left the hospital. He prayed earnestly for these two things.
The Kingdom which is divided within
itself
One day, I asked the doctor why the platelets were suddenly decreasing. He told
me that the white blood cells (WBC) produce antibodies against any foreign
material like germs,etc. Likewise, the WBC due to wrong signals start producing
antibodies against the platelets. The platelets that are produced in the marrow,
when they come to the blood circulation, get destroyed by these antibodies and
hence the reduction in platelet level and peripheral destruction of platelets
occurs.
I asked my husband - “How is it possible that one type of cell in the blood
destroys the other type of cell in the blood without any reason?
We read in the Bible that the Kingdom that is divided within itself will not
last. God has created us with life in the blood. Satan has brought this kind of
division in your blood and has caused this disease."
Then I rebuked the devil and evil forces that caused this division and war in
the blood, in the mighty name of Jesus.
Jehovah – Jireh
Usually there was not much ready and liquid cash in my Bank account. But in December
1990, I took a loan of Rs.10,000/- to buy National Savings Certificates for
Income Tax purposes. But somehow I did not do that.
Something prevented me from buying the NSCs.
Then in January 1991, my husband took ill and we were about to start to
Vellore. At that time I did not run here and there for money. Our Lord God who
is Jehovah-Jireh -- our Eternal Provider had already arranged the Rs.10,000/-
in my Bank Account.
I withdrew that money and made a vow. Lord, I believe that you have arranged
this Rs.10,000- for our medical expenses. Before this money gets exhausted,
please grant my husband perfect health and bring us back to Madurai."
On 20th January, my husband remembered that he was to receive a credit of
Rs.10,000/- in his Bank account. He asked me to write to his branch and find
out about it as we may require that money.
The very same day, at about 9.30 p.m., our Vellore Town Branch Manager visited
us and told us that he contacted our Head Office regarding our expenses. If the
hospital would give an estimate of expenses, then the Bank would directly pay
the bill to the hospital. He came to tell us only about this, and left after a
few minutes. To my husband, it appeared as though God had sent His angel to
deliver this message.
The next day 21.1.91, when the doctor visited us, my husband told him that we
required an estimate of probable medical expenses so that we could give it to
the Bank. The Doctor replied that if surgery was unavoidable, the expenses might
come up to around Rs.20,000/- if not, it would be around Rs 10,000/-. We simply
did not understand what the surgery was all about. When the doctor came, my
husband was reading a chapter in the Acts and after he left, he continued
reading it from the place he had stopped. It was in Acts 20:24 -- "But
none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself. So that I
may finish my race with joy, and the Ministry which I received from the Lord
Jesus, to testify the Gospel of the Grace of God."
My husband was unperturbed by the word ‘surgery’- Praise the Lord!
The chief came the next day and told my husband that it was the 3rd week since
the onset of the disease. There was no improvement in his condition. Therefore,
there was only one way to save his life. If they removed his spleen through
surgery (splenectomy) there was 50% chance of survival. Even then my husband
was unperturbed. But I was so worried. “Operation? Already the blood was not
clotting properly and was bleeding. When they perform the surgery, if there was
excess bleeding and if the doctors were not able to arrest the bleeding what
would happen?” I was torn by these thoughts.
Organs of Body
written in the Book
in
our ward, one Mrs. Selvamani, a catholic believer, was staying for her
husband’s treatment. I rushed to her and told her "Look, sister, all of a
sudden the doctors are saying that my husband needs to undergo surgery. It is a
major surgery and I am alone here. All the relatives have left thinking that he
will be all right. What will I do?”
She immediately comforted me and strengthened me saying, "Don't worry
sister, there is a verse in Psalm 139, regarding the days on which the parts of
the body -- the body organs are created. We will pray over that verse."
Both of us searched for that verse. Oh! what a wonderful verse. It was like a
beacon for a drowning ship
"Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect, and in Thy book all
my members were written which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there
were none of them." Ps.139:16 (KJV) .
According to the New King James version,
"Your eyes saw my substance being yet unformed. And in your book they all
were written The days fashioned for me when as yet there were none of
them." Ps.139:16 (NKJV)
In the English Bible versions the full impact of the verse is not explicit.
But in the Tamil Bible, which we read at the time of crisis, it reads thus,
“Your eyes saw my substance; my organs, all of them and the days on which they
were fashioned were written in Your book even before they were formed."
We knelt down and prayed; “Lord Jesus, we believe according to this verse that
all my husband’s organs, especially the spleen and the day on which they were
formed were written in Your book even before they were formed. Since it is so,
without your will, unless you strike off my husband's spleen from your book,
how can the doctors remove it through surgery? Please give my husband divine
healing through your grace.”
I shared with my husband the secret of this verse which God has sent through
Mrs. Selvamani. Both my husband and I held on to this verse and started praying
earnestly.
I will Restore Double
On one hand we continued to pray, and on the other hand the doctors started
preparing my husband for surgery. They administered a vaccine called Pneumovax
costing Rs.1000/- which was bought from Madras. The surgeons visited and
examined him.
One day I was brushing my teeth in the bathroom and crying to the Lord;
"Oh, Lord? How long should we stay here ? This hospital is like a
jail" Then the Lord spoke clearly, "Return to the stronghold, you
prisoners of hope, even today I declare that I will restore double to you"
I rushed out, searched for the Bible, and located the verse. It was in
Zech.9:12
I told my husband that Lord Jesus has promised that He will restore double
today. We too must pray accordingly. That day my husband’s blood was tested
again. So I started telling everyone I met, “The Lord has promised to double.
Wait and see today. In today's blood test by God's Grace, the platelets will
definitely double.”
Lean not on your own understanding
Next morning I was eagerly waiting for the
results. I was turning the pages of the Bible for reading. The Lord spoke
through Prov.3: 5,6.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own
understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your
paths."
I could not understand anything. What is this? The Lord said He would restore
double. Now he says not to learn on my understanding. I was confused.
After sometime, the blood test result came. The doctor said that the platelet
level had in fact dropped from 12,000 to 10,000.
Commit to the Lord
Then I said, “Lord, knowing that we are going to receive adverse results, have
you warned me in the morning itself not to lean on my own understanding? Thank
you Jesus."
Then my husband and I committed ourselves to the Lord’s will and submitted that
His will be done and fulfilled in our lives, especially in the course of this
sickness.
"Lord, if it is your will that he should be healed through the surgery,
then let that be done. We are not adamant that we will not go through the
operation. If it is your will to heal my husband without surgery, then let that
be done. But we definitely want healing, since it is your will that we should
be healthy. But we commit to You the way in which he should be healed."
We prayed at our Lord's feet and committed ourselves totally to His will. I
fasted for 3 days to subject my self to God's will. It was very difficult to
commit to God's will in such a situation. I think it is quite easy to commit to
God's will while selecting a job or selecting a bride or bridegroom. But, what
we faced was a life and death struggle. We tarried more in prayer and crucified
our self-will.
Jehovah
– Shalom
There is a wonderful chapel in the Vellore hospital. The sweet and quiet
presence of the Lord fills the chapel. In fact one can feel God's presence in
the entire hospital. Every morning while going for shopping, I used to go to
the Chapel and pray.
While I was in Vellore, I would get upset and gloomy sometimes. Our children
were staying with my brother and parents in Madurai. I used to worry about
them, how they were and whether they were missing us. Our son was 8 years old
but our daughter was very young, only 4 and a half year old at that time. She
is her daddy's pet. Our Bank sends us for out-station training now and then,
but we would come back in two or three weeks. But this time they had to wait
for us indefinitely. I used to get dismayed and shaken by these thoughts. They
were really agonising, excruciatingly painful moments of a mother’s heart.
One day while I was crying, thinking of our children, the Lord spoke through
Is.49:25 -- "For I will contend with him who contends with you, and I will
save your children..” Thus he comforted me.
I used to go to the Chapel often and pray. “Oh! Prince of Peace, have mercy on
me. Lord, you have said that you will give us the peace that the world cannot
give, you have said that our peace will be like a river. Please give me that
peace now. If I give up my hope now, my husband will also be upset. Girdle my
faith with divine strength and power. Give me PEACE. You have said in Phil.4:
6,7. ‘Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication,
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God,
which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds through
Christ Jesus’ please fill me up now with the peace which surpasses all
understanding .”- I used to plead with the Lord.
Then, like water flowing from a waterfall, divine peace used to fill me up.
Like a battery, I used to get charged with divine strength and peace.
Often
we used to ponder why God allowed this disease. The Lord revealed many things
to us. God chose Noah and his family. God decided to destroy the entire earth.
If God had decided He could have taken Noah and his family to Heaven like he
took Enoch, destroy the Earth, then bring back Noah and his family to earth.
But the merciful and sovereign God decided that Noah should make an Ark
according to His instructions and measurements as his refuge. He closed the
door of the Ark and guided Noah through the deluge. Until that time the earth
had not seen rain. It rained for the first time during the deluge. How Noah,
who had not seen rain, would have got frightened while he was inside the Ark.
God's will was to guide him through the anxious days.
Like this, in the lives of believers, God decides to lead and guide them
through suffering, agony and disease. He says, "In the world you will have
tribulations, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world." (Jn.16:33)
Also it is written in I Cor. 10: 13 "God will not allow you to be tempted
beyond what you are able but with the temptation, will also make the way of
escape that you may be able to bear it."
Manifestation
of God's Glory
Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego were set over the affairs of the Province of
Babylon (Dan 2:49). They also had to pass through temptations and tribulations.
They had to be thrown into fire and reveal the Glory of God.
Moreover, when Jesus Christ was in this world, the disciples who saw a man who
was born blind, asked Jesus who sinned that he was born blind. Jesus answered,
"Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should
be made manifest in him.” John 9: 3. Like these, God gave us many revelations.
My husband's sister and brother-in-law are working as scientists in the USA in
the field of cancer research. When they heard that my husband was affected by
ITP, they contacted scientists who were working in Haematology. They were told
that if children get this disease there was a chance for the platelet level to
rise automatically. But for adults there was no possibility for platelets to
increase on their own. But my sister-in-law told me over the phone, that with
men this was impossible, but with God all things were possible. (Mat.19:26) We
would pray over this verse, she said.
I will come to you
It was 27th January. I was walking in the hospital verandah and was praying
silently, "Lord, do not leave me and my children as orphans in this
world." Then the Lord spoke "I will not leave you orphans; I will
come to you." Then I replied, "What Lord? You will come to us in your
second coming. How long will we have to wait for it?" and walked away. I
did not have the wisdom to understand what the Lord said.
Spirit Anointing -- Fire Anointing
On
the 27th night, we were awake until midnight and were reading the Bible. I
slept for sometime. My husband continued to read the Bible. He saw the time. It
was 11:59 midnight. He waited for 28th to be born. He woke me up at 0.01 AM. We
prayed and went to bed. On 28-1-91 early morning my husband passed through a
supernatural experience. Listen to the first hand account of it, he says --
As I lay on the hospital cot, I saw Bro. S. Sankar, an evangelist, coming. He
asked me "What do you want?" I said "I yearned for the anointing
of the Holy Spirit at the Tirupattur Fasting Prayer meeting itself..."
before I could complete that sentence, tears rolled down my cheeks. After
sometime , Bro. Jeyaraj of the Blessing Youth Mission was coming towards me as
I was lying on the cot. At that moment I saw a bright white streak of light
enter me through my head and passed through my body. My body got illuminated
like a 10,000 watts bulb. I was glowing. Oh! it was a glorious experience. I
could feel the position in which I was lying -- on my right side of the body,
head more towards the right side of the cot and the leg slightly towards the
left side of the cot. To me I was like a cocoon glowing in orange colour. In
retrospect, I would say I had the colour of a glowing coal or molten iron. I
was trembling mildly. This would have lasted about 10-15 seconds. Then, the
white streak of light resembling a slanted 'Z' rose from my cot and went out
through the door. I revered the experience and started praising God. I was
praising and glorifying God for almost a few minutes.
I wanted to share my experience with Renu. I woke her up and asked her for the
time. It was 3.58 a.m. on the 28th January. I asked her to come and sit beside
me and told her of my great supernatural experience. She said it was the power
and glory of Jesus Christ that had passed through me in the form of light.
According to all our prayers, I had been anointed by the Holy Spirit and would
have received the healing also. Because He makes the crooked places straight,
He would have made my malfunctioning spleen straight.
I did not accept it fully. The experience was too good to be true. I thought
and said it was most probably a dream or a sample of the anointing of the Holy
Spirit I was going to receive. I said anointing of the Holy Spirit was a real
life experience and then how could Bro.Sankar and Bro.Jeyaraj come? Inspite of
these questions in my mind, I was feeling very happy about the experience.
Then we decided that we would believe that the Lord Himself had come and we
would ask Him to unravel the mystery. We praised and thanked the Lord Jesus for
having come. We prayed and went back to bed.
When I woke up in the morning, the lab technicians paid an unannounced visit
and drew blood for the platelet count test.
During the day, Renu and I discussed the experience again and again. I did not
fully accept that I had been anointed. Renu said that the blood test would be
the real test whether the power of Jesus had passed through me or whether it
was a dream. If my platelet count had increased, it was a definite confirmation
that it was a true experience and that I was anointed by the Holy Spirit and in
that process my body had been healed of the illness. The entire day was spent
at the Lord's feet, praying for revelation. In the evening when Renu had been
to the shop, I was conversing with God -- "Lord, when I came to the
hospital, you spoke to me directly and answered my doubts and questions. Now
you are silent. . May be I am not talking to you. ...God please speak to me
.." I repeatedly prayed again and again.
I will deliver you
At the same time Renu also had an encounter with God. She says:
On 28.1.91 evening, I was going for shopping. As I was walking along the
corridor near the chapel, the Holy Spirit urged me to go to the Chapel. Usually
I go the Chapel in the mornings. That evening, the Lord definitely prompted me
to go to the Chapel. I obeyed and stepped into the Chapel. While I was entering
the Chapel, the Lord clearly spoke:
"Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall
glorify me." (Ps.50:15) I went inside the Chapel, knelt down and prayed.
“Lord, you know that we are in great distress and you know our agony. In our
agony we are crying out unto you. You know that if you perform a miracle and
deliver us, the glory and praise of healing us from this rare disease will
belong to You. If the doctors cure the disease through surgery, all the glory
will belong to the doctors. What will we say when we go to Madurai? Would we
say that we went to Vellore and the doctors performed a surgery and healed my
husband? If You heal him, we will tell every person we meet that our Lord Jesus
has miraculously healed my husband without surgery. We will bear witness to You.
We will go from Church to Church and exalt Your good deeds of Grace. You have
said, whosoever offers praise glorifies Me. We will keep on glorifying You by
offering thanksgiving and praise. Have mercy and compassion on us and heal my
husband, Lord. According to your immense Grace answer our prayer. We believe
that your power and glory has passed through him. Reveal it to us. Throughout
our lifetime we will be a living testimony to You, Lord Jesus." I cried
and prayed, pleaded, interceded and travailed .
On
28.1.91, around 8.30 p.m., we were talking to our cousins. Though we were
talking, my mind was on the vow I made to God and my husband's mind was
attracted towards his prayer that the Lord would speak to him.
Around 8.40 p.m., Dr. Ganesh came in and said to our surprise "The blood
test reveals that your platelet count has increased from 10000 to 21000. The
chief is thinking of discharging you. He will confirm this tomorrow." He
went away. All of us rejoiced in one voice, "Praise the Lord."
God spoke to my husband through the doctor. It was one of the happiest moments
of his life. The happy aspect of his blood result was one thing. God's answer
to his prayer gave him the greatest joy. My husband immediately shared with us
his petitions and the answer. He was jubilant. We then shared the entire
episode with my cousins.
How true is the verse "All things work together for the good of those who
love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." Rom.8:28
The one who promised, He would restore double, has covered Himself with light
as with a garment (Ps.104:2) Has presented Himself on 28.1.91, and restored two
double blessings. He gave anointing and healing. He doubled the platelet level
count that was 10000 to 20000+1000 = 21000. When we commit ourselves fully to
His will, His Grace gives us many blessings.
When we first came to Vellore, CMC Hospital, my husband started reading the New
Testament from the beginning. I used to joke that only when he finished the New
Testament, he will receive healing. Surprisingly, it was more than a
coincidence that on 28.1.91, he completed reading the New Testament.
Rev.21:4-7 especially spoke to to husband. The Lord who said, "Behold, I
make all things new” Has made my husband's spleen new.
My husband continued to read the book "Baptism and the Lord's Supper"
One portion particularly appealed to him. It is written in the book "Is
your God big enough? Is He big enough for your life, your problems, your needs
and your heartache...?"
Our God is omnipotent. There can be no limit, boundary or edge to His ability
and His power..."
My husband told me, "Yes, really and truly my God is big enough for my
disease and my life. Never will I doubt His deeds." We praised, prayed and
went to bed in peace.
Next morning, the chief came and announced, "There is an unexpected
improvement in your condition. Therefore, we will wait for one more week. Next Monday,
we will again check your blood. If the platelet count rises to 40000, I will
discharge you without operation. I will keep you under observation and defer
the decision on surgery." Praise the Lord.
The Monday he meant was 4.2.91. 5.2.91 was the day that the Lord had revealed
that my husband will be all right through Bro.Sigamani in Madurai,before we set
out for Vellore.
The Lord's appointed day was approaching. Lord Jesus Himself had intervened and
given divine healing. It should be made perfect on 4.2.91. "I have come
that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." (John
10:10) says the Lord. Accordingly, He could make my husband's life more
abundant. Lord Jesus who multiplied 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes and fed 5000
people lives today. He is unchanging. He should multiply the 21000 platelets
and discharge us without surgery, we prayed.
We were a bit confused as to how much platelet to ask of God in prayer. Both of
us prayed on 29.1.91 that the platelets be increased to 320000. However, both
of us felt uncomfortable after making the request. So, both my husband and I,
independently asked God whether our prayer request was correct. God revealed
His will to each of us separately.
My husband was reading the Book "Prayer - Conversing with God." It is
written in that book that our prayer requests should be need based and not want
based. Similarly, while I was asking God whether what we were praying for was
correct, the Lord revealed, "It is only for 4 days you've subjected your
self will to God's will and committed yourselves totally to God. After you got
the results you wanted, your self-will is acquiring dominance."
We shared with each other what God had revealed to us. Then with agreement of
hearts, we asked for forgiveness and prayed, "Lord, doctors are expecting
40,000 platelet count. Please give us the platelet count that will sustain us
in Madurai without giving my husband a relapse or trouble. Please multiply the
platelets accordingly."
My sister-in-law from USA telephoned. I shared with her how our Lord has
answered our prayers and has doubled the platelets. I asked her to pray for
normalcy of platelets by next week so that we could get discharged and go home.
She told me that she had gone to their chapel and a missionary told her that
Jesus Christ had already started healing her brother and that he would be all
right. She asked my husband to pray repeatedly over the verse -- "I shall
not die but live and declare the works of the Lord." Ps.118:17 . This verse
is called the Fighter's Prayer.
A lady doctor was listening to our conversation as the telephone was in the
duty room. She thought - "This disease is a dreadful and a deadly disease,
yet this lady says that by praying they got the platelets doubled and they will
continue to pray and become normal and get discharged next week. Poor thing!
though she is educated and has a good job, due to worries and tiredness, she
may have turned nearly mad! Her husband may collapse any time. The same mental
condition has afflicted her relative also who is speaking from USA. It is
really surprising that her relative who is well educated -- a doctorate at that
and who is engaged in medical research also has the same beliefs and
attitudes." She pitied us.
We received an express letter from my sister-in-law. Our Lord is not only a
Lord at hand but also a Lord afar off. We saw with our own eyes how our Lord
works across continents. We share the letter with you.
Galveston
Jan 31, 91
My dear Renuma and Suresh,
We believe and praise the Lord with the hope that Suresh is totally healed by
the time you receive this letter. When we talked to you on Jan 30 (yesterday),
we were encouraged to hear that when the platelet number goes up to 40000 you
will be discharged and there would be no need for surgery. At 9.30 am, (2 hours
later) when I turned on the TV, Marilyn Hickey, a true child of God was
starting her regular program. Sometimes before she starts with her scheduled
teaching, she'll get the inspiration to pray for someone's special need. When
she prays, she will ask us watching the TV program to join her and pray the
same prayer of faith. Yesterday, I was simply astounded to hear the prayer that
I prayed with her. She first explained that 30 years back they did not have
enough money to pay the rent for the Gospel Building. They joined together and
asked the Lord to multiply the 30 dollars they had. When they counted again, it
was 75 dollars they needed for payment! She said that our Lord was a God of
multiples and started praying for multiplication of God's gifts and blessings.
She said that someone has a lack (I prayed for Suresh's lack of platelets) Just
as the Lord multiplied the bread loaves and the fish to feed thousands, he
would multiply what we have. In blessing he will bless and in multiplying He
will multiply (Gen 22:17) Grant this provision to my brother or sister who has
the lack within 24 hours in a miraculous way." I have noted the time when
we prayed this prayer of agreement (Mathew 18: 18-20) as 9.35 a.m., on Jan 30th
1991. Our God who satisfies all our needs according to His riches in glory in
Christ Jesus is limitless. He is able to give total healing to Suresh, not only
40,000 platelet count but the normal level and also heal all other weaknesses
in his body. Praise the Lord. His name will be glorified as was ever!

That evening, Mrs. Kadakshamani of Madurai, visited us. She had come to Vellore
for her eye treatment. She used to visit us often. As soon as she entered the
room she said "Suresh, you look very healthy. Your face is sparkling with
a new colour. See your palms." Only then we noticed his palms. They used
to be very pale. They were now really pink in colour and looked very healthy.
We praised God and shared with her the miracle the Lord had performed.
This is the Day that the Lord had made
My husband's blood was tested on 4.2.91. The whole day I fasted and prayed. I
decided I would eat only after hearing the good results. All of us prayed earnestly.
Results came in the night itself. The junior doctor came and said "To
everyone's surprise, your platelet count has increased to 122000. We were
expecting only 35000 to 40000, but this has increased to a near normal level of
122000"
"This was the Lord's doing. It is marvelous in our eyes."
(Ps.118:23). Our Lord had healed my husband so suddenly that even the doctors
could not believe it. The same lady doctor who had listened to my telephone
conversation with my sister-in-law, had gone to the lab to collect the result.
She was particularly eager to see my husband's results. On seeing this
wonderful result she told our ward nurse, "This result is not normally
possible. These people got the result they wanted only through prayer. It is a
medical mystery."
On 5.2.91 the chief declared, “We are very happy. You are healed without
surgery. I am discharging you. I am reducing the dosage of your drug. You have
to come next month for a check-up. There is a chance of relapse for 40% of the
people on weaning from steroids. When you come for your check-up, if the
platelet count has decreased, then you will have to undergo splenectomy.
Otherwise, you can go back the same day.”
We praised and glorified God who had answered our prayer, healed my husband,
and brought us back out of captivity according to His immeasurable Grace.
Jehovah – Nissi
We got discharged on 7.2.91. I got up early in the morning and prayed, “Lord ,
your presence led us to Vellore. Likewise, let Your presence go before us. In
all things I do regarding discharge, let Your presence and your glory manifest
itself.
Our Bank issued a cheque for our hospital bill. As I took the cheque to be paid
at the counter, our ward attender, one Mr.Thomas, who accompanied me to the
counter, saw the Banker's cheque and said, “Madam they will not accept cheques.
Only against cash payment they discharge you" True to his name, he was a
doubting Thomas!
I asked him, "Thomas, who is going before us?" He gave me a puzzled
look. He would have thought that I had gone mad because there was no one else
except the two of us in the corridor. I told him that I had prayed that morning
and had asked Lord Jesus to go before me. He is going before us as King who
breaks open (Micah 2: 13). We reached the counter. I prayed and gave them the
cheque. They did not say anything but gave me a form to be filled up and
accepted the cheque and issued the discharge certificate. Thomas confessed, “
Madam, now I believe in Jesus”. The Lord's name was glorified.
We got discharged on 7.2.91, went to Tirupattur Fasting Prayer Meeting
conducted by Bro.Sam Jebadurai, gave our thanks to God and returned to Madurai.
Our children saw me in the auto, and ran towards the auto asking "Has our
daddy come?" They jumped into the auto and climbed onto my husband's lap.
They showered him with kisses. I watched the reunion with tears in my eyes.
This picture is still vivid in my memory. I can never forget the family
reunion. How great and merciful our loving Father is!
He calls those things that do not
exist as though
My husband is the only son of his parents. They have two daughters and one son.
"Lord you have given back the father to our children, son to the parents
and husband to me. What shall I render to you for all the benefits towards me?
I will take up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord.” I
praised God
with
tears in my eyes.
Everyday I offer thanksgiving and praises to the Lord from the depth of heart. The
fact that my husband is alive today is a puzzle to medical realm. That too, in
perfect health! Without splenectomy, his platelets have increased by God's
Grace. It is a wonderful thing. Not only that, a month and a half before the
disease struck, my husband was suffering from a severe cough. No sooner he
opened his mouth to speak, than the cough would start. Once his cough started,
it would continue for hours.
But according to the verse, "He spoke and it was done, He commanded and it
stood fast" (Ps.33:12), The Lord must have commanded the cough to stop.
For from 6.1.91, the day ITP struck, there was no sign of cough. Doctors felt
that if there had been cough, then the damage to the lungs would have been
extensive. There would have been bleeding in the lungs too.
The Lord says, "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common
to man; but God is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what
you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that
you may be able to bear it.” (I Cor.10:13)
I often pondered over the disease. According to medical science, a platelet
count of 10,000 is fairly fatal. Normally, the patient would collapse when the
platelet count touches 10,000. But my husband stayed alive even when the
platelet count dipped to 9,000. One day when I was worshipping our Lord over
His various names, God revealed it. One of His names is "One who calls
those things which do not exist as though they did." (Rom. 4:17) That is
why He called the life of my husband which could not have existed -- which did
not exist -- as though it existed and guarded my husband's life.
At the end of this book, I am enclosing the Medical Report of my husband.
Please go through it.
When we were discharged, Satan brought a doubt in a corner of my heart.
"What will you do if the disease recurs? Doctors say that in 40% cases
there will be a relapse." At that time God sent Mrs. Kadakshamani to me. I
shared with her my anxiety. Immediately she said, "Renu, our Lord Jesus
healed so many lepers, blind, deaf and cripples. Is it written anywhere in the
Biblethat anyone of these persons who were healed by Jesus returned to Him
saying --Lord the disease you cured has come back? -- No, disease cured by
doctors can relapse, but our Lord gives divine healing, a permanent cure -- The
Egyptian whom you see today, you shall see no more forever -- (Ex.14:13) Go to
Madurai with peace." I got strengthened in faith.
I prayed to God, "Lord Jesus, bless my husband with long life." Lord
has given me that promise, "You will see your children’s children."
(Ps.128:6) Even today I am praying over these promises.
"The Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see no more forever."
"You will see your children's children."
Before I went to Vellore, I prayed over the money. I had the Rs.10,000/- that
the Lord gave, and prayed that the Lord should bring us back to Madurai before
the 10,000/- gets exhausted.
Everytime I opened my handbag for money, I prayed, “Lord, bring us back from
our captivity before this money is over.” Even while mixing beverages like
Horlicks and Complan, I prayed, “Lord, before this bottle of Horlicks is over,
please heal us and take us back to Madurai.”
The Lord is faithful. He brought us back out of our captivity before the Rs.10000
we had got exhausted.. He returned us from captivity even before the bottle of
Horlicks got empty. Hallelujah!
You may laugh at my prayers. What is this? Prayer while making Horlicks? Prayer
while opening the handbag? But my heartbeat itself was prayer. Except the time
I spent in sleeping, I prayed "Lord this.." and "Lord
that.." within my heart. Both of us prayed separately each morning. Then
we read the Bible and prayed as a family. After that while I attended to my
duties and work in taking care of my husband, I never let my heart worry or
imagine that something untoward would happen to my husband. I would say that
the Lord also did not let my heart worry. I prayed, He promised; He granted.
Likewise, whatever I prayed for during the course of this illness, and whatever
my husband prayed for, was granted. Praise be to the Lord.
Not even a single little prayer went unanswered. However big or small it may
have been, however silly it may have been, the Lord had mercy on us and
according to His immeasurable Grace, honoured it and answered the request. Our
Lord is a speaking God, answering God! Hallelujah!
Moses - Aaron – Hur
When
Moses was guiding the Israelites from Egypt, Amalek came and fought with Israel
in Rephidim (Ex. 17:8-13). Joshua fought with Amalek. Moses was holding the rod
of God on the top of the Hill. When he brought down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
When he held up his hand Israel prevailed.
When Moses became tired, Aaron and Hur made him sit on a stone and supported
his hands. Then Joshua defeated Amalek with the edge of his sword.
Like this incident, my husband was fighting the disease and Satan who brought
this disease. I was praying. And thousands of people supported us through
intercession.
Prayers were offered for us in many churches. CSI Churches, Assembly of God
Churches, Methodist Churches, Siloam Church, Seventh Day Adventist Church, ECI
Church and All Saints Church are some of the Churches that prayed for us.
Many evangelists and pastors prayed for us, especially Bro. and Mrs. Sankar,
Bro.J. Sam Jebadurai, Bro. & Mrs. Arumainayagam, Bro. Jeyaraj, Prayer
warriors of Jesus Calls Prayer Tower, Bro. Ananda Sthira, Bro. Mohan C.
Lazarus, Pastor N.J. Paul Raj, Bro. Jayapaul of Madras, Pastor Jeremiah, Pastor
Jesudas, Bro. Devadass, and all the pastors of the above churches and many more
servants of God prayed for us.
Many Prayer Groups and Prayer Cells interceded for us. Especially Madras Chain
of Prayer, Madurai-Ramnad Branch, the believers in my office, Madras HBI Prayer
Group, many Gospel Teams and Prayer Groups in Vellore Hospital fought for us in
Prayer. Bro. Jeyaraj of Blessing Youth Mission sent many BYM missionaries to
the hospital to pray. He also came and prayed. Special prayers were offered in
the daily prayers and Fasting Prayer meetings of Blessing Youth Mission.
I must also mention friends and relatives. Hundreds of people prayed day and
night with tears. My mother-in-law Mrs. Rajamanickam prayed, "Lord, take
my life if required. But plese give life to my son." See a mother’s loving
heart. My mother fasted for 5 days and fought for her son-in-law in prayer.
Dear Aunt Sarojini Sundaram who was in CMC Hospital with her son. Dr. SasiKumar
was a great source of comfort with prayer and Bible verses. May God bless all
who offered intercessary prayer for us.
I often get amazed as to how I was so bold and courageous to face such a crisis
and what amount of faith I had. After returning to Madurai, many people told me
that they prayed for my faith to be strengthened and increased; that I should
not lose faith. Only then did I realise the power of intercession. How the
prayers that we offer for others works.
During this illness, I often asked Lord Jesus - `Why are you so quiet? Do
something and heal my husband.' The Lord's reply came in the February issue of
Annrantrulla Appam Daily Medition. Bro. Sam Jebadurai in the key message
meditated upon the verse - "Simon, Simon ! indeed Satan has asked for you,
that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you that your faith should
not fail and when you have returned to me, strengthen your bretheren."
Luke 22:31-32
The Lord has replied to me that He was not quiet but He had prayed for me .
That is why my faith did not fail.
The
Sword of the Spirit
During the course of the illness, many verses
from the Bible guided us.
"He sent His word and healed them and delivered them from their
destruction" (Ps. 107:20) According to this verse, the Lord sent His word,
healed my husband and delivered us from destruction. Moreover, the only
offensive weapon to drive away Satan is the Sword of the Spirit which is the
word of God according to Eph.6:17. In the whole armour of God, there are six
weapons. Of these, five weapons - Helmet of Salvation, Breastplate of Righteousness,
Girdle of Truth, Sandal of Preparation of the Gospel of Peace, Shield of Faith
- are defensive weapons. We can guard ourselves against the deeds of the devil.
But the only offensive weapon to drive Satan away is the Sword of the Spirit
which is the Word of God, because God’s Word has power. He created heaven and
earth with His Word. He has written His powerful Word in the Bible for our
benefit. Not only that, He sends to us suitable verses to be used in specific
circumstances.
Whenever we earnestly read the Bible with prayer seeking God’s guidance,
certain verses single out themselves and speak to us. It appears as though they
are written just for us. The Holy Spirit indicates that we should claim these
verses. Sometimes, the Holy Spirit reminds us of these verses in our spirit.
Sometimes, God sends His Word through others.
We are collating the verses thus given to us for your benefit. We prayed over
all these verses. We would open the Bible, and keep our fingers on such
specific verses and pray -"Lord, we believe in this verse. It should get
fulfilled in our lives." We prayed and wrought victory over Satan.
"Be still and know that I am God." Ps.46:10
"The Lord will fight for you and you shall hold your peace." Ex.14:14
"Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard
for Me?" Jer.32:27
"Call to me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things

God's word is spirit and life. "For as the rain comes down, and the snow
from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth and make it bring
forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater.
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me
void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing
for which I sent it." Is.55:10,11
His Word works and manifests according to these verses. Believe and receive the
blessing. Believe and receive now itself. None of God's words returns to Him
void without accomplishing the purpose for which it is sent. Besides, God gives
a verse for a specific person in a specific circumstance. In Greek, such a word
of God is called " RHEMA".
Pastor Paul Yonggi Chho who defines Rhema in his book 'The 4th Dimension' as
“Here is my definition of Rhema: Rhema is a specific word to a specific person
in a specific situation.” (Page 91)
All the words of God that are written in the Bible are called `Logos'. When our
heart is filled with Logos, and we wait upon the Lord for a specific prayer
request, the Holy Spirit interacts with us through a verse, or such verses are
given through others. For example, the promise verse (Gen.28:15) which my
husband received at the New Year's service is one such Rhema. These verses,
Rhema of God, accomplish the work which our Lord pleases and do not return
void.
After returning to Madurai, I often recollected how wonderfully our Lord guided
us by His Word. I happened to read the book - `The 4th Dimension' by Dr. Paul
Yonggi Cho. In that book he has given the above explanation for Rhema. Then
only I realised how wonderfully God has given us His Rhema - like the whole
armour of God; I will deliver you and you shall glorify me; I will not leave
you until I have done what I have told you - to us and made the miracle happen.
According to our promise to God that we shall glorify Him and Him only, we
shared our testimony in many churches and religious meetings. Even today, we
are sharing our testimony with everyone we meet.
Lord says, -"Whoever offers praises glorifies me." When we praise Him
and offer thanks to Him for all His benefits towards us and bear witness to
Him, He is glorified.
God Has Spoken Once, twice I have
heard
Again in March 1991, we went to Vellore for a check up. Lord Jesus again
doubled the platelet count to 244000. Let praise, honour and glory be to Him.
The doctors sharply reduced the steroid treatment - and took my husband off
steroids for 2 weeks - and we were asked to come again in May.
In May also, the platelets were 250000. Doctors said , "You do not need
any drug nor are you required to come again to Vellore for a check up.” They
asked us to do periodic check ups in Madurai. Now the platelet count of my
husband is 295000. Glory be to God.
By the power of Jesus, my husband is alive! He is keeping perfect health and
bears witness to Jesus that Jesus lives, guides and heals. Praise to God.
Lord who guides in doing His Ministry
We conducted a thanksgiving meeting in Feb.91 in Madurai and offered praise to
God.
Lord spoke to us clearly through Hab. 2:2,3 to publish my husband's testimony
as tracts.
"Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may see who reads
it.” Hab.2:2
Accordingly, we have published the tracts in Tamil and English and are
distributing them. Many brothers and sisters who do hospital ministry,
distribute them. The feedback from them is very heartening. For instance, one
of feedbacks from Tuticorin states that while the patients read the tracts,
their faith in Jesus immensely increases and they receive divine healing. God's
name is glorified.
Likewise, in order to share how God held our hands and guided us through the
valley of darkness of death, how we tasted His presence, power and guidance
daily, our Lord enabled us to publish this book to His glory in Tamil and now
He has made us publish it in English also.
The Lord uses us to deliver His messages and our testimony in many churches and
meetings. As a husband and wife team, we do part time ministry. We proclaim the
Gospel. We pray for the sick and suffering . We pray for prayer requests we
get.
Everyday, Lord Jesus guides us. The Lord who said "I will instruct you and
teach you in the way you should go, I will guide you with my eye."
Ps.32:8, instructs us and guides us.
“Oh! taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man who trusts in
Him.” Ps.34:8
Please pray for us and our ministry.
The Lord is not partial
Because my husband and I had accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour,
even when we had to walk in the valley of darkness of death, He was with us and
like a good shepherd He guided us through.
We believed there was nothing which was impossible for Him and prayed for
perfect healing for my husband. He listened to our prayers, had compassion on
us, made His power and glory pass through my husband’s body and gave him divine
healing.
It is written that Jesus came into this world to save sinners. You may think,
what have I done? Have I stolen anything? Have I murdered anyone? I too had
such thoughts. Having been born in a traditional Christian family, we thought
that going to Church on Sundays was Christianity.
But every man who is born into this world is a sinner. It is not when he
commits sins that he is a sinner. He commits sins because he is a sinner.
Sin entered into this world when Adam and Eve disobeyed God and sinned against
Him. This made all their descendants sinners. It is written that the wages of
sin is death and that without shedding of blood there is no remission.
(Heb.9:22)
It is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats would take away sins.
(Heb.10:4)
That is why God sent His only son into this world. He was wounded for our
transgressions. He was bruised for our inequities; the chastisement for our
peace was upon Him, and by His Stripes we are healed. (Is.53:5)
The Lord laid on Him the inequities of us all ( Is.53:6 )
(Jesus) Himself is the propitiation for our sins.( I John 2:2 )
Jesus offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice to pay the penalty for our sins.
All our sins, curses and diseases were laid on Him. He hung between heaven and
earth as a perfect sacrifice and shed upto the last drop of blood for us.
Why did His hands bleed, pierced with nails? Only for the remission of sins we
commit with our hands.
Why did he hang on the cross with His legs pierced with nails? To pay the
penalty for sins we commit by walking and going to the places we ought not to
go.
His head was crowned with a crown of thorns. The name of the thorns is Bina
Christy and they are 2" long. They were driven into His head and blood
rushed out from His head. The Roman soldiers spat on His face and the spittle
mixed with His blood adorned His face. Why dear brothers and sisters? For
remission of sins we commit with our crooked and evil thoughts.
Cursed is everone who hangs from a tree. (Gal.3:13) Jesus Christ was made a
curse for us, bore all our curses and hung as a curse and redeemed us from
curses.
God did not create thorns, when He first created the heaven and earth. When
Adam and Eve were cursed, the earth brought forth thorns and thistles (Gen.3:18)
Lord Jesus accepted this curse on His Head as a crown of thorns. He also bore
our diseases. How? To bear the diseases which affect our body, His body was
torn with a whip. He was scourged. His back was like a land ploughed. By His
stripes we are healed. (Is.53:5)
Thus, Jesus bore our sins, curses and diseases in the Cross. He crushed Satan's
head on the Cross. He died on the Cross as a perfect sacrifice. On the third
day He won over Satan who is the master of death and rose from the dead.
To ask the question "Oh death, where is your sting? Oh Hades, where is
your victory?" Jesus swallowed up death in victory. He lives today and
reigns from the right side of His Father in Heaven. He gives us eternal life
and all these blessings.
How do we inherit and claim all these blessings? Let us realise our true nature
- the human nature to commit sins. All of us do not commit theft or murder. But
we must realise the simple fact that no one is righteous before God. We must
believe and accept with our whole heart that Jesus Christ
suffered on the Cross for our sins. He died for our sins. He rose from the dead
and is living today . When we repent and confess our sins to Jesus Christ and
ask him to forgive and remit all our sins, every drop of blood he shed for us
on the Cross in Calvary will cleanse us of our sins and wash away our old
nature and we are immediately transformed into children of God. Oh! how simple!
But it makes a world of difference. The Lord showers His blessings on His
children.
"But as many as received Him (Jesus Christ) to them He gave the right to
become children of God, even to those who believe in His name."
(John.1:12) This is the experience of salvation, the miracle of miracles.
Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved, you and your household.
(Acts. 16:31)
Accept Lord Jesus as your Saviour and Lord. Invite Him into your lives. Then He
will enter your lives. He will do many miracles for you. He will meet all your
needs. He will guide you daily. Oh! what a privelege it is to be a child of
God!
Dear brothers and sisters, what is the role you have assigned to Lord Jesus in
your life? Is He reigning in your life as your Lord? Or, is He still knocking
at the door of your heart, standing outside? If you have not accepted Him yet,
make up your mind now. Kneel down now, confess your sins and say "Lord
Jesus, I am a sinner, forgive my sins. Come into my life. I commit my entire
life to you. I accept you as my Lord and Saviour. Hereafter I am your
child."
Offer this small prayer. This small prayer of a few lines will change your
entire life. You will be delivered from the clutches of sin, disease, curses
and problems.
The joy of salvation will start bubbling in your heart. A divine peace - the
kind of peace the world cannot give - will encompass you. You will be entitled
to eternal life, divine healing and all other blessings. You will not lack
anything. Get victory through prayer.
Whatever may be your need, Lord Jesus is able to meet that need. Jesus is
sufficient.
May Lord Jesus bless you and keep you.Amen ! Hallelujah!!

and generalised purpuric spots for 6 days. Patient had cough for 1 1/2 months
which was treated with amoxycillin. There was no history of any fever. No
previous history of any bleeding disorder.
On Examination: Young adult. Afebrile. Blood Pressure - 120/70mm. Hg. pulse
rate 80/minute - Extensive ecchymosis. No gum ooze. Fundus - no haemorrage. No
significant lymphadenopathy. There was no hepato splenomegaly. Lungs were
clear.

Discussion: Mr. Chelliah had a low platelet count and bone marrow was
consistent with peripheral destruction of platelets confirming a diagnosis of
ITP. He was started on steriods. He had delayed response and his platelet count
showed significant improvement only after 2 weeks of therapy. He developed
cushingoid facies related to therapy. There was no evidence of any other
complications. In the event of relapse of disease on steriod withdrawal, he may
need to undergo splenectomy. He has been vaccinated with polyvalent pneumovocal
vaccine.
Recommendations:
1) Tab Prednisolone 40mg daily till 18.2.91 30mg daily
till next review.
2) Tab Ranitidine 150 mg daily at night.
3) Can join back to duty after one week
4) Review in Haematology OPD with counts on 5-3-91
